about

Taranto is one of the most polluted cities in Europe, because of its large steel and energy industries. In 2005, for example, Taranto’s industries produced about the 93% of Italian dioxin, and 62% of mercury (data from INES, APAT/EPER). The industrial sector employes about 20.000 jobs in Taranto, so the social and urban envelope of the city runs on a thin line between threat of losing work and the growing data about cancers between people. The big companies in Taranto declare to cut work forces when environmental organizations stress them about toxics. We say “Work or Live!”.

Environmental Study #1 is an electroacoustic work composed on 2008.
The sourcing material of composition has been divided in different parts:
a)Investigation about natural, urban and industrial sounds in Taranto, with recordings.
b)Study about molecular composition of toxics involved in Taranto and official data of pollution for each substance.
c) Interview to local people with questions about personal history, knowledge about environmental topics, urban living, and desires for the future. The recordings of voice have been cut to obtain only breath and resulting sounds.

Each source is a modulator of the other, to simulate a complex sound environment where the interactions between elements are ruled by a set of chemical structures translated into a symbolic programming language (Mathematica) to determine musical structures and sound mutations.

Multichannel Audio.
Duration: 8.54 min
Year: 2008
Software used: Csound, Max/MSP Wolfram Mathematica, Logic Audio.
